Bird Market in Antwerp
Bird Market in Antwerp
I see.
Thousands of tourists visit the Bird Market every Sunday. The market is located in the middle of the theater district, on Theaterplein. This square was renovated in 2008 and now has a canopy that partially covers the Bird Market. Traditionally, poultry and birds are sold at the Bird Market. Initially mainly pigeons, but after the Second World War, native and exotic (song)birds also appeared in the market.
You can still buy birds and poultry there, but nowadays the real market enthusiasts also have a great time here. There are plenty of stalls with clothing, delicacies, and the latest accessories. Particularly special are the pitchmen who demonstrate and try to sell their products. Since 1951, competitions in pitchmanship have been organized. The winner is allowed to call themselves the king of the Bird Market for a year. Eloquence, humor, the quality of the pitch, and the extent to which he captivates his audience are evaluated by the professional jury. Whoever has become king or queen three times may call themselves the emperor or empress of the Bird Market.
The Bird Market is held every Sunday from 8 am to 1 pm at and around Theaterplein. Admission is - of course - free.
